The RN Educator is responsible for health education and primary health care interventions with target populations in a harm reduction/health promotion context, planning, establishing and maintaining connections with community partners.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide front line service and be a community partner
• Deliver formal and informal services in the areas of general health assessment and care, overdose prevention, STI care
• Participate in van and site coverage
• Responsible for connecting people who use drugs with multiple barriers to community supports and services
· Plan for, and with community partners, enhancement of the community’s access to health services
• Build relationships and provide services to help people who use drugs to engage and support their individual capacity to take charge of their own lives and health
• Working from a Harm Reduction/Health Promotion framework, the nurse takes into account the physical and social determinants of health to provide basic care and health assessments with follow up care
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and Current registration with CARNA
Skills, Abilities and Attitudes:
· Able to work non-judgmentally with people who may be using substances within a Harm Reduction framework
· Knowledge, experience or willingness to learn of substance use and culture, overdose prevention, sex trade, STIs and blood borne pathogens, and inner city lifestyles
· Public speaking and group facilitation is required
· Knowledge of and experience in community development
· Demonstrate interpersonal and organizational skills
· Ability to work in an Indigenous cultural context
· Familiarity with local community resources (e.g. substance use, social services, justice)
· Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team setting
· Ability to work in partnership with other organizations
· Flexibility, creativity, enthusiasm and non-judgmental attitude
· Self-directed and motivated
· Plan and execute evaluation activities
· Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
· Experience working with marginalized communities is an asset
· Required to have current BCLS certification
· Criminal Record and Child Intervention Checks (results will be reviewed on a case by case basis)
