Children, Youth & Family

A critical focus of our work is minimizing the time children spend in care; we do this by immediately engaging the significant people in their lives, often using culture as our guiding practice in supporting reconnection, healing, and belonging.

Youth Community support program (YCSP)

Youth must be between the age of 10-17 at the time of referral

The youth must have active, on-going involvement with a psychiatrist
The interdisciplinary team for each youth and family includes the assigned clinician, occupational therapist (if needed) through Recovery Alberta, and a youth and family caseworker and family caseworker from Boyle Street Community Services.
The program has room for 16-30 families.

The Youth Community and Support Program works with youth between the ages of 10 and 17 years-old and who are referred by a psychiatrist. Boyle Street Group Living Program (GLP)

Program Overview

Our continuum of care provides developmentally appropriate programs that support children and youth at every stage with the skills, support, and opportunities they need to grow and succeed.

We operate 6 group homes providing care for children and youth ages 2-17.

We are committed to providing trauma informed, relationship-based care that promotes safety, well-being, growth and a sense of belonging for every child and youth we serve.

Ubuntu supports some of the most vulnerable children, youth, and families in Northeast Edmonton. Practice is focused on community-driven wrap-around services grounded in culture. This enables Ubuntu to support families by walking along their journey with them – at their pace.

Born from the collaborative vision of the C5 Partnership: Boyle Street Community Services, Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, Newcomer Centre, Norwood Child and Family Resource Centre, and Terra Centre. Ubuntu connects families with streamlined, strength-based support when they need it the most.

Ubuntu also works in partnership with the Manning Crossing Children’s Services office to reconnect and empower family and youth in a holistic and meaningful way.

Every family will have their choice of multidisciplinary team working with them.

To make every effort to keep families together.

We will work with each family to explore what miyo pimatisiwin, the good life, means to them and determine what role the Ubuntu team has in supporting a good life for them.

We recognize that each family has their own set of unique traditions, values, and structures. Our Ubuntu team will work from a place of respect and humility while acknowledging that the family is the expert on their journey.

If a child/youth is in danger, we will work to keep their environment as consistent and safe as possible. We will explore the possibilities of the parent(s) temporarily leaving the home instead of the child, to try and increase stability.

That every family will be offered the opportunity to participate in creating an individualized case plan.

To honour and respect the rights, role, and needs of both the mother, father, and all other guardians.

To do our best at understanding the cultural context around those we serve.

To honour and respect Indigenous and Metis cultures of those we serve and the sacred lands that we are working and residing on.

To do our best to include representatives from these cultures in the healing and service delivery process.

To ensure that the Indigenous and Metis people we serve are given opportunities to engage in ceremony and cultural activities regularly.

Not to impose our own cultures on those we serve and to never judge other’s cultures.

To seek out temporary and permanent solutions that are in line with children and families’ cultural identities.

The space in which we deliver services out of, okimaw peyesew kamik, will reflect the cultural identities of those we serve.

Every child/youth will have their voice at the centre of planning for their future.

Every child/youth will be offered an individualized plan and support that is tailored to their needs.

To do our utmost to minimize the amount of time a child/youth is in care.

Ubuntu, in partnership, will use a combination of early intervention and family intervention services to achieve better outcomes by providing a continuum and range of community-based services centered in the child’s community.

Starting at the beginning of our work with a child/youth, we focus on seeking out their significant people. We do this by balancing our Western and Indigenous ways of knowing and being and are relentless in our search for connection, regardless of the child’s legal status.

To do our best to ensure that every child/youth will be kept in, or connected to, the community in which they came.

To create three local councils to provide support and advice to the Ubuntu program; the Elders Council, the Kokum circle, and the Youth Agency Collaboration.

That a significant percentage of our staff will be drawn from Indigenous or multicultural communities.

To be there for families after their files are closed, by providing access to a range of ongoing community supports.

When contracted services are required to support a family, Ubuntu will select these agencies with intention. We engage with high-quality providers from Indigenous or Multicultural non-profit sectors while strengthening our inter-agency professional relationships.

The Ubuntu program will lean on its partnerships within the C5 to help breakdown systemic barriers for the families, youth, and children that we serve.
